Our immune system is the body’s tool for preventing or limiting infection and on the whole, it does a great job of defending us against disease-causing microorganisms but it can fail at times making us unwell also, as we age, our immune response capability becomes reduced therefore the idea of boosting our immunity is enticing!
To function well the immune system requires balance and harmony and although there are no scientifically proven links between lifestyle and enhanced immune function, there are natural ways that we can strengthen our immune system:

- Eat a healthy, varied diet focusing on fruit, vegetables, nuts and seeds, healthy fats, meat, fish or plant proteins to ensure that you ger enough immune boosting vitamins and minerals such as Vitamins A, B6, B12, C and D (from sunlight) as well as copper, folate, iron, selenium and zinc.
- Get enough sleep, poor quality sleep is linked to a higher susceptibility to sickness. Aim for 7 hours or more sleep a night as an adult
- Eat more fermented foods or take probiotic supplements. Gut health and immunity are interconnected and these foods may bolster you immune system by helping it identify and target harmful pathogens
- Limit your sugar intake as added sugars contribute to obesity, type 2 diabetes and heart disease which all can supress the immune system
- Moderate exercise such as walking and swimming can reduce inflammation and promote a healthy turnover of immune calls
- Managing your stress levels through yoga, meditation and exercise can help keep your immune system functioning properly
- Stay hydrated as preventing dehydration is important to your overall health
