Guidance on the Use of Reasonable Force in Schools – consultation open

The Department for Education has released a revised guidance on the use of reasonable force and other restrictive interventions in schools, and they are seeking feedback from educational institutions. This updated guidance is designed to help schools minimise the need for such interventions through effective prevention, de-escalation strategies, and thorough data analysis.
Key Highlights of the Revised Guidance:
- New Statutory Requirement: With effect from September 2025, schools will be required to record and report every significant incident involving the use of force to parents. This aims to ensure transparency and accountability in handling such situations.
- Support for Staff: The guidance provides detailed instructions on when and how to use force safely and lawfully. It includes specific support for staff working with pupils who have special educational needs or disabilities (SEND), ensuring that these interventions are used appropriately and sensitively.
- Safeguarding Duties: There is a strong emphasis on meeting safeguarding responsibilities towards both staff and pupils. The guidance underscores the importance of creating a safe and supportive learning environment for everyone involved.
This consultation period is a crucial opportunity for schools to review the proposed changes and provide feedback to ensure the guidance is practical and effective in supporting a safe educational environment. Schools are encouraged to participate actively in this consultation to help shape policies that best meet their needs and the needs of their students.
