Hosting a Safe School Festive Party Whilst Navigating the New Legal Duty to Prevent Sexual Harassment

December 9, 2024

While the festive season is a time for celebration, it’s important for schools and academies to approach holiday events with care to ensure a safe and enjoyable environment for all members of staff. Being proactive about potential challenges can help maintain the festive spirit while fostering a culture of respect and care.

With the introduction of the Duty to Prevent Sexual Harassment, schools and academies now have a legal duty to proactively prevent sexual harassment in the workplace. This includes ensuring that all school events, such as Christmas parties, or staff social events which, as set out under the new duty are considered ‘in the course of employment’ are safe environments for all staff.

Steps Schools and Academies can take for a safe and festive holiday season

1. Risk Assessment and Planning
Schools and Academies should identify potential risks and take measures to minimise them:
  • Identify Potential Risks: Consider the nature of the event and identify any situations where harassment could occur.
      • Review Past Incidents: Reflect on previous challenges or feedback from staff
      • Evaluate Events: Consider the nature of holiday activities. For example, evening gatherings or those involving alcohol may require additional planning.
      • Implement Safeguards: Choose inclusive and accessible activities, such as daytime gatherings, and provide clear guidelines for behaviour.
2. Policy Review and Communication
Ensuring everyone understands the expectations is essential:
        1. Update Policies: Make sure anti-harassment policies are current and cover off-site events and interactions with external parties.
        2. Circulate Guidelines: Share these policies with staff ahead of the holiday season, emphasising the importance of respectful interactions and appropriate conduct.
3. Foster a Positive Culture
Promote an environment where everyone feels safe and valued:
      • Train Staff: Provide training on recognising and addressing harassment, ensuring all staff understand their responsibilities
      • Highlight the Importance: Emphasise the legal requirements and the importance of proactive measures to prevent harassment.
      • Encourage Dialogue: Create opportunities for open communication, so concerns can be addressed promptly and effectively.

By following these guidelines, you can ensure that your school's Christmas party is not only festive and fun but also safe and inclusive for everyone.

Happy holidays and best wishes for a joyful and safe festive season! 🎄
